The Yorkie is an adorable and cute toy dog that you just can’t help but shower with love. People mostly adore its long fine, silky coat that usually parts along the spine and falls straight down on each side. With its small size, flat head, black nose, medium sized muzzle, and very expressive eyes, one can’t help but just love the Yorkie. It is a kind of breed that is always so energetic and full of adventure. A Yorkie is also oblivious of its small size. It can sometimes be too brave for its own good. But this characteristic has also made it become an excellent watchdog, protecting its territory any way it can. It usually barks at strange dogs and animals within its territory and can be very suspicious of strangers. Yet it is also very affectionate with its master and is such a playful dog that it goes well with older and considerate children.
Yorkshire Terriers is a fairly recent breed as compared with more classic dog breeds. This dog breed is estimated to be 100 years old or so with its key origins not totally certain. One account presumes that Yorkshire Terriers were said to be initially bred in England where it was developed to catch rats inside infested mineshafts and as hunting dogs small enough to go inside badger and fox burrows. But then again, there are others who believe that they were the result of Scotsmen weavers who brought with them various breeds of terriers as they search for work in the woolen mills of Yorkshire. The first Yorkshire Terriers were a bit bigger than their current counterparts. But through years and years of selectively breeding only the smallest Yorkies, they have gradually miniaturized into what they are now today. The adorable Yorkies became fashionable pets during the Victorian Era in the late 1800’s with the first Yorkie, having the standard characteristics it is known for today, appearing in a dog show in 1870. The Yorkie arrived in the shores of the US in the 1880’s and has since touched the hearts of many dog lovers around the country. They became an instant favorite among dog lovers as well as dog breeders and their popularity as miniature pets continue until today.
Yorkshire Terriers are great as pets because they are sweet and loving to their masters. But having a Yorkie as a pet would also need a lot of attention. Because of their natural long hair, they need to be groomed regularly. Their coats also need daily to weekly brushing and combing to maintain their sheen along with the occasional shampooing. Despite its shiny long coats, Yorkies as a breed sheds little or no hair. What also makes them as ideal pets is that they make good watchdogs and are fairly easy to feed. They are also ideal as apartment pets or as pets in other homes with limited amount of space. Yorkies prefer a warm environment and are sensitive to cold.
